Marshy Point's live-stream camera spots a river otter swimming along Dundee Creek. It starts in the upper left corner of the frame and works its way toward the bottom right.

River otters are weasel-like mammals with dense brown fur. Their long, streamlined bodies and webbed feet help them swim, but they spend time both in the water and on land. Males are bigger than females.

They are found along the shores of the Chesapeake Bay--including its marshes, streams, rivers, and lakes. They make dens along banks (with an underwater entrance), in another animal's burrow, or in a natural hollow (like under a log).

River otters are mostly nocturnal, and are the most active in the early morning and in the evening.

Once 'live', the camera feed will be viewable from the Nature Center, as well as online at: marshypoint.org

With osprey returning to the area soon, viewers will hopefully get a 'bird's eye view' of an osprey pair and their nest this year, and in future years as well. (Early March 2016)

Trail Guide Training participants from Marshy Point and Cromwell Valley explore Hemlock Gorge in upper Baltimore County.

The gorge, with its hemlock trees and cascades, is located along the Gunpowder River north of Prettyboy Reservoir.

Hemlocks are evergreen trees. Their sweeping branches and dense cover provide shade and help cool the water below. This helps fish to thrive. They can also be found along other streams and rivers in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed.

Wetland habitats keep changing. This area was nearly empty until recent rainfall filled it in. Listen to frogs, learn about dragonflies, spot a painted turtle, and see the 'Amphibians of Marshy Point' exhibit.

On a warm, late Winter morning, tundra swans and Canada geese (also known as whistling geese) search for food on Dundee Creek near Marshy Point.

The swans are 'tipping up' to eat submerged aquatic vegetation (SAVs) and invertebrates in the mud below.

Here are some baby foxes, playing on a warm Spring day at Marshy Point. They have likely been out of their den for a few days, with their mom nearby.

When observing wildlife, it is important to remember to view them from a distance, to let them be themselves.
